About the painting:

This piece is another of multiple glazes of color to achieve the depth and glow of light. A bit of drama in this Moonscape that draws you in and hopefully takes you to a mystical reverie.

One of the good things about having been away from painting for the last year was that it gave me a renewed perspective about just what it was that I enjoyed so much about my favorite medium, and my approach to painting.

I enjoy taking the time now to glaze and relax with the work. Live with it a bit

and sit back and change a passage here or tweak a stroke there.

And color...there is nothing I like better than playing with color and light.

So if this piece of art appeals to you and you want to have it...

let me know.

Moon Madness! What does that get you?

Dalmatian Moon
(SOLD)
Because this is an ART BLOG as well as a chatty patty blog I share this painting that sold last year to help DRTB to illustrate how this week has made me feel!
Yesterday it was a day of taking a step forward and hopping about 6 steps back.
ARGH! Frustration!
I really hate days like that but I ask myself what can I make out of it?...I ask this once I get a little distance, a little perspective, a glass of wine maybe.
So this morning after a good night's sleep I am able to say that the
Waxing Moon, that will soon be full and bright, just slowed me down to a reflective state instead of a high energy, buzzing around and bull in a china shop momentum.
Well what did that get me? a chance to decide to catch up with some life and home things before they get away from me.
It made me rebalance.
I could stop being frantic and realize that I have work that is getting finished and ready to go.
I have work in progress that I personally like and I have a plan to begin the 30x48 dalmatian seascape that is a commissioned piece.
So in other words... in a note to me from the Universe...
CAROL, SLOW DOWN AND BREATHE!
Take a break, take a pause, take a look around. Look at the bigger picture.
Oh,.... OK. I can do that.
I tend to jump up and run in 10 directions at once and wonder why I hit the wall every so often.
So I will heed the wisdom of the Universe...
I will howl at the moon and pay attention and find a pattern of order.
It's there I just have to SPOT it.
this is the way to enjoy the process that gets lost in the flurry of confusion of activity.
The Universe is Wise when you step to the side and stop and listen.
~~~
Have a great day...go at your own pace and remember to breathe!
And for Fun ... Work(s) In Progress
******
UPDATE!
RESERVED
Liver pups inspired by Joan Murphy's images of her own Dals.
The top painting is based on a pic of her Hombre when he was a pup.
He has just the right pose and attitude for
"Life Is A Party"
I saw him surrounded by colorful balloons and his beautiful self making a fun design.
This oil is 12x12 and will be available in the next week when it should be finished. It is a fun process painting the balloons in thin glazes, this is at its second pass.
***
The seascape based on Brulee suggested a curious pup discovering a new "friend" in the tide line on the shore.
"Diversity of Friends" 10x10 oil It is in a drying stage waiting for the next session. The beauty of oil paint is that you can work on several at the same time which gives you a chance to make decisions of where you will go next, or in many cases, where it will take you on the next pass.
***
If you would like to reserve a painting to purchase when done...
If you REALLY want the painting for your own, please let me know because I always get emails after the painting has sold asking me if I can paint one like it. I don't. It doesn't work that way.
But I do appreciate the thought!
ALL my work when sold gives 20% to non-profit rescue helping homeless animals.
Life and the Joy of Painting....
WORK IN PROGRESS...
My 20's were about living larger than life...My 30's were about establishing a homebase, physically, mentally and spiritually...My 40's were about using what I learned to help family members who needed me...My 50's have been about expressing my ME-NESS and taking all the other decades with all their foibles and faux pas' and getting ready to blast into my 60's with adventures and a capriciousness that I hope screams "I've got nothing to lose! so WHY NOT?!"
Just felt like sharing that and that was a bit more than you probably wanted to know.
I am also sharing a FIRST LOOK.... ironically it is going to be titled:
LOVE ME...LOVE ME NOT
Patterns and more patterns... An update.
UPDATE...
AVAILABLE
First Light of Fall
10x10
oil on canvas
CAROL CHRETIEN
***
Not sure how accurate the color is on any given computer screen but in reality this painting conveys the first light of Autumn...my favorite season.
It was painted with the impulse to create heat and light and interesting shadow patterns along with a "patterned" dog.
(Well let's be honest my Lizzie stood in as my model but I have added a different pattern than her own.)
Also the colors within shadows, their own interesting contribution from all the various light sources and bouncing reflections and then my own creative description as seen though my own artistic eye is brought together in a piece like this.
Then it begs the question of how does that translate on any given screen in digital mode?
***
My collectors (and you know who you are...) tell me that when they get the painting in their hands it looks "even better"....whew! that is a boon to me to know that.
We do what we can via cyberspace and digital photography but there is nothing like the original in YOUR light in YOUR hands.
I can say this as I look around the room at what hangs on my walls!
LOL
July 1st! Follow-up To WIPs...
Both of these paintings are finished and have SOLD. In both cases they sold before I could officially list them (reserved from First Look) and the rescue that benefitted was
WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE, an official Art Helping Animals supported charity.
An additional donation went out to Montgomery Humane Society as thanks for the use of the ref image of the Dal puppy in foster care who inspired the painting "The Little Dipper."
Both of these models were once abandoned Dalmatians who now live in wonderful loving homes.
The Little Dipper
(Cole Edward)
My New Life Will Have Gardens
(Oreo)
***
My approach to using reference images for paintings for rescue is always interesting to me.
I often have no plan to do a particular painting and then I see a photo (especially of a homeless animal) and it justs suggests a scene, a feeling or a moment in time that I can create around it.
Sometimes people send me images and give me permission to use them if & when the inspiration strikes me. I just never know when it will click.
The painting above of Oreo, a dalmatian recently rescued and starting Foster Care, getting him ready for his forever home, was one of a series of images that showed his first day in a home. Oreo never made it as a foster dog...he was adopted by the family who wanted to foster him!
The image of him tired and resting in the back seat of their car on the first day just suggested the painting above to me. While it was not a dead-0n portrait of Oreo, the ref image gave me the information to translate into the finished work. The background is completely from my imagination and it gave me the title.
***
thanks for stopping by...I will be adding the updates of the other Work in Progress paintings soon.
I have 2 new Labrador Retriever paintings swirling in my mind and will be doing something new for Dalmatian Rescue of Tampa Bay and NARA airedale rescue very soon.
FIRST LOOK!!! more new In Progress work....
SOLD
In My New Life There Will Be Gardens....
Oreo was in rescue, then the plan was foster care until that special "forever home" could be found...but the foster family fell in love with Oreo and now that SPECIAL home is found.
At the end of the long first day Oreo's new "mom" took a picture of him in the back seat of the car ...just wiped out, dozing.
That image inspired the painting above with permission to use it for my painting that will benefit WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE.
While it is not a dead on portrait of Oreo the idea was in the pose. He will have beautiful dreams now that he is loved forever!
STAY TUNED...when it is finished I will post it for sale with all the details. For now I will dream of gardens with him.
UPDATE: this painting was reserved and SOLD. Donation has been made to Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue.
SOLD
12x12
I can't begin to tell you how vibrant this is in real life. But...the white tones it right down.
The title tells the story...this dal is living life large...she knows the rest of the Dalmatian Population might not be so lucky so she advocates to help homeless Dalmatians everywhere.
Lizzie has been loved desperately since before she was born. You don't get luckier than that in this life.
Inspired by Lizzie on her lounge chair.
Best Time of My Day - FIRST LOOK!
SOLD
BEST TIME OF MY DAY
8x10
oil on canvas
Carol Chretien
***
Anyone who knows a Dalmatian KNOWS this expression...this is the "listening to my Dad's footsteps coming home" and after that very still moment....an explosion of pure dal exuberance and welcome.
I have not painted many dals recently as there have been other artists doing wonderful paintings of my favorite breed and it was getting to be too much of the same.
My good artist friend Vernita Bridges-Hoyt recently finished a Dalmatian in landscape that blew me away and if my walls were not well covered in my own Dal collection I would be buying that new one of hers! YIKES!
(but I confess I do have one of her Dal puppy oils in my studio to inspire me!)
So...I broke out this little piece of Spotted love on my easel to get me in the Dalmatian Painting mode in preparation for a couple of Dalmatian Commissions and get my head and hand back into the Spotted Zone.
it will help DRTB when it is sold
What a Week! Chicken Soup was on the Menu...
FOR THE ARTIST's SOUL
What a week!
***
I have been in bed all week with the worst cold I have had in years. Knocked me right out of the picture and while I am somewhat better I haven't the energy to get into the studio just yet.
Better days are coming but for now I just want to send along this piece of new work I was working on before the cold got the best of me.
It is called "Patterns, Soft and Bold" it will be offered soon for the
Dalmatian rescue
WILLING HEARTS
one of the best of the best all-volunteer rescues.
Details will be coming soon about the listing.
Looking forward to getting back to normal and back to work
and kiss this cold good-bye!
I've Been LOST
I wasn't voted off the island and I haven't really been away but I could not for the life of me find my way back to this blog...A SPOT 4 Art!
So this is a test to see where it goes and how I can find it again.
I maybe should throw out some bread crumbs to find my way back?
